The rest below is more the background on Dragon Boats in Oman
What are Dragon Boats?
Dragon Boats are slender racing “canoes” which can accommodate either 12 to 22 paddlers sat line abreast depending on size (9m or 12m). A drummer sits on the bow to set the pace for the paddlers, and a helm sits at the stern using a large oar to steer. Racing Dragon Boats is exhilarating experience and generally takes place over a course of 200m up to 2000m. Due to the low freeboard, the boats can only be used when the wave height is less than 20cm which restricts their use to calm stretches of water.
The Current Status of Dragon Boating in Oman
I have been working for some time to get Dragon Boats in Oman. This is partly for a UWD team building event planned on the 31st Jan, and partly to test the level of interest in the sport in Muscat. I have succeeded in renting 2 boats from Dubai for 1 week which are currently parked in Ras al Hamra Recreation Centre. We plan use the boats for a the team building event on 31st Jan, and then follow this with demonstrations, trials, and training for RAH club members over the next 2 days. The boats have to go back to Dubai on the 2nd February.
The president of the (IDBF ) International Dragon Boat Federation's president, Mike Haslam, is flying from the UK for one week to provide support on a voluntary basis for our initial events and to provide training and certification. Depending the effort and time people are prepared to invest, we could get quite a large number of people certified as crew, and a lesser number certified as helms or coaches. Potential candidates are members of the team building event itself, plus other members of Ras al Hamra Recreation Centre.
In the next few days Mike Halsam will also give a “Dragon Boat International Event Organiser” course, free of charge at the RAH Recreation Centre. This is likely to be of wider interest to the Omani Ministry of Sport, since Oman will have to organise Dragon Boat racing as part of the 2010 Asian Beach Games (see Asian Beach Games in 2010 link). It would be a great start to the success of Dragon Boating in Oman if a number of Omani citizens get “Event Organiser” certification so they can act as Ambassadors for the sport.
