For a map and some guidelines please go to :

For a multimedia presentation please go to:

(These pages are under development)

The following description refers to the attached picture of Wadi Nakhr:
Idea : for first timers: the upper part is easier!
Path 5: you can access the easier upper part by walking down to the middle level from S/E of the settlement Al Hail next to the flat area with the big Wild Olive tree - The path is exposed and can be slippery, but you reach soon a nice balcony walk before you descent towards the upper pool. From there in 5 minutes up to the beginning of the upper Via Ferrata (VF2) - Total 20 min from the village.
or you abseil down the upper part VF2 (approx. 30 m). There is an abseil ring at the upper level looking down to the left.
To get there you park your car close to the blue sign board refering to the water dam just before you come to the large flat area on the plateau. Walk down to the wadi bottom and walk downstream until you reach the end of VF2 ( keep left before the edge).

Arrow Main access : walking for 1 hour 15min/ 3.5km from the village Al Katim on the path W6 to the abondend village Sab Bani Khamis, from there over to the terassed fields - follow the unmarked Path1 to the water pool above the village to its highest point, from there turn right up the ridge, zigzagging for approx. 100 meter on Path2 to the beginning of the lower part of the Via Ferrata (VF1)

Exclamation you should be used to exposed rock faces - the lower part is a 80 meter high nearly vertical wall with medium difficulties
Exclamation There are no markers or signboards (yet Embarassed )
Exclamation Please make sure you use the proper equipment and keep enough distance to the climber above you.
Exclamation Helmet recommended.

Very Happy Great views into the canyon

GPS data will follow soon.

Any comments on the information map/multimedia are highly appreciated: http://www.sultanate-of-oman.com/

As far as we know, the only local outfitter capable of arranging a trip to the Jebal Shams via ferrata is Muscat Diving and Adventure Center (MDAC) located near the Radison Hotel. They certainly run frequent trips to the Snake Gorge via ferrata. You can reach them at 24485663. Speak to Rob Gardner or Toby about arranging trips. You can find more information on the MDAC website. Look up Rob in the Omanclimbing.com member list and link from there. Good luck!

In February it was announced that all the Via Ferrata were closed for maintenance.

Does anyone know whether any maintenance has been done and whether they are now "re-opened"?

regards

Pete

All VF's are still closed. Maintenance may take place this summer/autumn.
