My wife and I will be escaping the cold of Mongolia for three weeks over Christmas and New Year and have decided to go to Oman. We're planning to do a lot of trekking, camping, climbing etc and hit the beaches for a few days as well. What sort of temperatures can we expect in the mountains at that time? Is it possible to buy/hire any camping gear there or should we bring it all with us? Any tips on places that are must sees/dos would be welcome.

Is anyone on this forum a couchsurfer member?

Hi,

Oman weather in December:
On the coast, it should be in the mid 20s C (70s F) during the day, and cooler at night. Temperatures in the mountains vary with elevation. At 2000 meters, it will be about 10 degrees C cooler than the coast during the day, and can approach freezing at night. At 3000 meters (Jebel Shams) it is below freezing at night. Camping gear suitable for car camping can be bought in Oman, at the big Carrefour hypermarket and other places as well. We've never heard of anyone renting equipment. If you're planning to do any backpacking, you should bring your own gear. Light weight is a very important consideration in that case.
