greetings all,
i enjoy trekking and have hiked trails in various countries.
i am a recently-arrived expat working in muscat and during the next 12 months would like to join with other like-minded to source information and experience the trails in oman.
is there an existing group of trekkers/campers out there ? or individuals seeking to form a small group ?
barry.

Hi Barry,

There is a group of regular walkers who meet during the week at the Al Maha service station near Sultan Qaboos University (at 4:45 this season) on Sunday and Tuesday for shorter walks (about one hour and a half). Within this group, there are people who have done almost every long trek in Oman and are good sources of information.

If you are interested in joining the group one afternoon, we can post more detailed information about the meeting point.

There is another group going out every Monday from 16.30h until sundown organised by Ed Follows (works at PDO). I will send you his email address through a personal message.
Cheers

Hi, I've recently moved to Oman for 6 months and I'm keen on meeting poeple to go trekking with. Unfortunately my office hours mean that I can't join the afternoon treks but as I have Friday/Saturday weekends I wondered if there were any treks on Saturdays that I could join? If there are how difficult are they and do they carry on into the summer or does it peter out because of the heat?

Hi,

i will be in the Muscat Area from 29.9.-15.10.2008, and i read in this forum that there are regular trekking walks on several days during the week?
Is it possible for me to join you and walk around with you experienced guys?
That would be really amazing!
Hope to hear from you,
Berni from Vienna, Austria

The regular afternoon walks that we do are on Sundays and Tuesdays, as we posted above. They usually last about 1 1/2 hours. The Tuesday walk is a bit sportier, faster with fewer rest stops. There is a good possibility that someone will plan a longer weekend walk during the time that you will be in Oman. Post again or PM us closer to your arrival date and we can help with directions and other details.

I will be back in September and certainly will plan longer weekend walks I would be glad to share with new trekkers. However, I wanted to highlight that walking in Oman is somewhat streneous due to the harsh terrain, hot weather even in winter time, and absence of water sources. Moreover, the Hajjar mountains are sparsely inhabited and most of the routes are not marked. I almost forgot to mention that there is no mountain rescue. Wink
See you then.

Hi Kim and Bill and Hamza,

thanks a lot for your reply! That would be fantastic, if we could join you at your regular walks - or on a longer weekend walk!
We know, that its not the easiest place for trekking, but thats one reason why i hope that we can do something together!
I will contact you (post at the forum) again closer to our arrival date!
All the best
Berni
