The ‘Grand Canyon’ of Oman

This lies below the mountain called Jebel Shams, Jebel is a mountain, Shams means of the Sun. Hence Mountain of The Sun is a literal translation.

The canyon has a classic walk up through it called the Persian Steps.

The mountain stands at 3010m and is the highest in Oman.

You can drive upto about 1000m below the summit, this puts you above the canyon.

The town of Bahla, or should I say the Old Town of Bahla, lies on the road to Jebel Shams, it is now deserted after the people were moved to a new village a few hundred metres away, they left the old village standing and it still stands as a tribute to the old way of life.

As you go around the village it is marvel to think that people lived and functioned in kind of circumstances that you see left behind.

The Old Town stands high above a wadi, nice and dry when we were there but it doesn’t stay that way.

The Palm Trees you can see below are all irigatted by hand every day of the year.  There are clay channels laid around the plants and as water is diverted down into the channels, people block different paths with clay filed clothes to change the flow during the day so that each plant gets water.

The road up here is only just visible above the height of the Wadi.
